Home Remedies for Menorrhagia and Metrorrhagia

If there is excessive discharge or blood from the womb during the monthly periods, it is called menorrhagia, but if there is irregularity of menstruation, the condition is called metrorrhagia. The treatment for both the condition is same.

Causes and Symptoms

These are two sides of the same coin only one factor of bleeding being common in the former there is excessive bleeding but in the latter there is bleeding at irregular intervals. But, both the conditions are referred to as Rakta Pradara in Ayurveda. Generally, aggravation of bile (pitta) is taken to be the contributory cause for both the said stages when there is profuse bleeding. In addition, hormonal inbalances also account for these conditions. Abnormal growths, in the uterus or any other organ, can also cause this stale of excessive bleeding. If excessive bleeding is not checked in time, it may lead to restivity, anaemia, pain in calves, pain and headache, giddiness and vertigo. There may also be backache, pain in the pubic region, hips.

Ayurvedic Remedies

  • The disorders may be due imbalance of the hormones, abnormal growths (whether benign or malignant) in the uterus may be at the root of excessive or irregular bleeding. In severe cases, bleeding may continue for a long time giving rise to symptoms of prostration like giddiness, constant headaches, pain in the calves and restlessness. Neglect of the condition or ineffective attempts at dealing with it may lead to anaemia of the most severe type. Saraca Indica and Lodhra (symplocos racemasa) are two remedies which have been successfully used by the practitioners of Ayurveda to deal with these conditions. A home remedy is to grind seven leaves of the pomegranate tree and seven grains of rice into a paste and given to the patient for a month twice daily. It acts as a curative as well as a preventive agent.

  • 20 grams of hark of Ashoka tree should be crushed and boiled in 250 ml. of milk and equal amount of water. When half of the liquid is left, it should he strained, sweetened with sugar and drunk. A few days use will put the patient on the road to recovery. Or , equal weight of Pathani Lodh, Red Ochre (geru) and Oak Galls (Mazu) should be finely powdered and 4 grams of it taken in the morning and evening with milk.

  • Half ripe fruits of the country fig tree (Gular) should be dried in the shade, powdered and mixed with an equal quantity of sugar. 6 grams of the powder taken with milk in the morning and evening gives relief. Alternatively, 3 grams of Rasaut and an equal quantity of shellac should be finely grind together and made into two doses, one to be taken mIlk in the morning and evening.

  • Another wonderful. remedy of this condition is Amla. Dry Amla should be soacked in juice or green Amla for three days and then grind into powder. Six gram powder taken with cow's milk for some days cures the condition.

  • Other remedies recommended arc (chalk) and geru (red ochre) grind together should be taken in 3 grams doses thrice daily.

  • Multani Mitti steeped in water and in the supernatant water drunk in the morning is also good for excessive bleeding for the womb. Five grams of bark kurchi and raw sugar mixed together taken in the morning and evening is also an effective remedy.

Precautions

  • Hot and spicy foods should be avoided

  • sugarcane juice, grapes, bananas, and pomegranates are particularly useful in this condition.

  • The patient should be given complete bed rest.

  • Any form of strain is to be avoided.

  • Worry and anger also tend to aggravate the condition and the patient should be kept in pleasant surroundings.

  • The foot of the bed should be slightly raised and no pillow should be used.

  • Sexual intercourse should be prohibited.
