Ayurvedic Remedies for Respiratory Problems

Respiration means that we exhale and inhale properly. There are lots of diseases related with our respiratory system.

Cough with Phlegm

  • Mix equal amounts of onion juice and honey. Have 1 teaspoon 3-4 times a day. This is a preventive medicine against cold in winter.

Cough (Dry)

  • 250 gms. of sweet apples should be taken daily for a week to obtain relief.

  • A glass of warm water with juice of 1 lime and 1-2 teaspoon of honey is very good for cough.

  • Mix 8-10 tablespoons of coconut milk with 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (khuskhus) and I tablespoon pure honey. Take every night before going to bed.

  • Mix equal amounts of honey and ginger juice for better results, warm the mixture a little and then have it. Have 1 teaspoon, 2-3 times a day .

  • Three pepper corns sucked with a pinch of black cumin and a pinch of salt gives relief.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon pepper powder with 4 teaspoon gur (jaggery). Make small balls. Suck 3-4 baIls/tablets during the day.

  • Mix equal amounts of pepper powder and sugar candy (mishri) by weight, mix enough pure ghee to make small balls. Suck one ball/tablet 3-4 times a day. Avoid curd, bananas, ice, rice, fried and cold foods.

  • Give 1 teaspoon of basil leaves juice, 2-3 times a day to children having cough. Tulsi leaves can be crushed to a paste and the paste squeezed through a clean muslin cloth to get juice.

  • Mix a pinch of turmeric with warm I cup milk and take it at night.

Whooping Cough

  • Take about 10 gms. of tulsi leaves and even amount of black pepper. Now grind them together to homogeneous powder form. Now adding a little of honey to the combination and make small tablets. These astringent tasting tablets should be taken at least four times a day. Don't swallow these tablets but suck them slowly.

  • If the accompanying cough be of dry type, add a little of honey then additionally, make the patient have the combined juice extracted from the even amount of tulsi seeds, ginger and onion. In case of wet cough add sugar candy also in the combination.

  • Crush about 50 gms. of radish and add equal amount of sugar cane juice. It would be advisable to add a piece of ginger's juice also in the concoction. Have this combination at least twice a day for speedier relief.

  • A child suffering from this trouble should kept away from all foods which produce phlegm like milk, ghee, sweets, rice, refined flour products, sugar and lentils. Give the child citrus but sweet fruits.

  • Burn the plantain leaves to ashes and ask the child to lick about 5 gms. of this ash daily. In about two weeks time this trouble shall be over.

  • If the child is also afflicted with constipation, make him lick the combination of pure honey 6 gms. and castor oil 6 gms, followed by the combination of cumin seeds, licorice, munnakka, boiled in water, mixed with pure honey.

  • Chew a clove with a pinch of salt to ease expectoration and rei ieve irritation in throat.

  • Pour 1 cup boiling water over ½ teaspoon each of ginger powder, clove powder and cinnamon powder. Filter it. Sweeten with 1 teaspoon honey and drink.
